Traditionally, the Abacos are the Eastern Coast U.S. neophyte skipper's first introduction to foreign cruising without having to cross an ocean or venture more than 25 miles or so from land. The islands of the Abacos offer a good sampling of Bahamian cruising from the solitude of the outer islands (for example, Double Breasted Cays) to the amenities of a major port (such as Marsh Harbour). In the Abacos you will find good fishing, excellent snorkeling, first class restaurants, protected harbours, very good internet access, a daily cruiser's net (in the Marsh Harbour/Hub of Abaco area), and a plethora of marine services running the gamut from simple repairs to haul-outs and major refits. The Abacos are very popular in the Spring and Fall, and during Abaco Regatta every Summer. WInters in the Abacos are much like winters in Central Florida and tend to be a bit cooler and windier than say, the Exumas. |
